Empirical Study on the Living and Working Conditions of Artists in Berlin
The study 'Precarious Capital, Creative Existences' is an empirical investigation by bbk berlin into the living and working conditions of artists in Berlin. It is based on data from two quantitative online surveys: a main survey and a supplementary follow-up survey.
The main survey comprised 49 questions and was conducted between 17 December 2025 and 31 January 2026. A total of 1,292 participants took part in the main survey.
Topics covered:
- Profession and Professional Framework Conditions
- Economic Situation
- Social Security
- Civic Engagement and Voluntary Work
- Abuse of Power, Sexual Harassment & Censorship
The main survey exclusively captured gross annual income — a relevant but limited indicator of the overall economic situation. To enable a more differentiated assessment, a follow-up survey was conducted between 18 March and 8 April 2026, focusing on earned income. A total of 517 respondents participated in the follow-up survey.
The empirical study will be presented on 28 April and made available for download here.
