Demonstration at Brandenburg Gate at 10 a.m.: WE NEED TO TALK!

16.10.24 Aktionstag #BerlinIstKultur Kulturabbau verhindern!

Attention new demo location: Platz des 18. März in front of the Brandenburg Gate

The #BerlinIsCulture action alliance is calling for a standing demonstration in front of the Brandenburger Tor at Platz des 18. März on November 13, 2024.

This is our response to the main committee meeting, which will negotiate planned cuts in the cultural budget of the Berlin budget.

A large number of Berlin cultural institutions, associations and personalities have joined this call to make the diversity and unity of the Berlin cultural scene visible on this important day: You can expect artistic contributions from Constanze Becker, Katharina Thalbach, Alexander Scheer and Lars Eidinger, the merger of the three Berlin opera choirs, the power of the Terra Brasilis Power Percussion of the ufaFabrik Berlin and the Berlin State Ballet, excerpts from “Line 1” by the GRIPS Theater and a conclusion with the Clubcommission Berlin e.V.. Speakers include director Heinrich Horwitz, artistic director Oliver Reese, as well as representatives of Zeitgenössischer Tanz e.V. and Berliner Literaturkonferenz. We are delighted to have actor Jürgen Kuttner as moderator.

Culture is what Berlin thrives upon. It is the driving force behind our city’s economy, our own form of heavy industry. Every euro invested in culture is an investment in the future of this city. We urgently appeal to Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, Senator for Finance Stefan Evers, Senator for Culture Joe Chialo, Parliamentary Party Leader Dirk Stettner, Parliamentary Party Leader Raed Saleh, and all Berlin’s parliamentary representatives: avert the planned cuts to the cultural sector!

Culture provides a wide range of social spaces for encounters and dialogue. On stages, in galleries, in libraries and project spaces, on the street or in clubs: this diversity is what makes Berlin a vibrant and open city, a hub of cultural sites for its many communities, a magnet for the international arts scene and a unique place to live. The work of the independent arts community, established cultural institutions across the board, amateur practitioners, Berliners and international guests is in constant dialogue, and interwoven in myriad ways. The result is the unique attraction of our cultural landscape.

We stand together in solidarity. We refuse to be pitted against each other for funding! Let’s take a stand for continued investment in culture because we understand: Berlin’s culture is not a “nice to have” – it is the beating heart of our city.
