Joe Chialo asked for his resignation as Senator for Culture on 02.05.2025. His reasoning also referred to the upcoming cuts in culture, which he was no longer prepared to support.

In recent months, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, has repeatedly publicly acknowledged the importance of culture for the state of Berlin and has now appointed the former State Secretary for Culture, Sarah Wedl-Wilson, as the new Senator for Culture in Berlin.

The bbk berlin is therefore hopeful that the change of personnel at the head of the cultural department in Berlin will bring about a change of direction in the hitherto haphazard and disproportionate cutback policy.

The spokespersons of the bbk berlin are looking forward to working with Sarah Wedl-Wilson, who will continue to be an advocate for the visual arts and stand up for culture. The strengthening of the studio program and art in urban space, the securing of the FABiK exhibition honorarium fund and the infrastructural offers for artistic work in Berlin are important achievements, the preservation of which must now be negotiated intelligently.

The workshops at the bbk berlin's kulturwerk have already convinced Sarah Wedl-Wilson of their importance as a production site for the visual arts in Berlin and beyond. At the 50th anniversary celebrations of the print workshop in Bethanien, she paid tribute to the facitities and called for the support of the workshops, which were founded and run by artists for artists.

We welcome Sarah Wedl-Wilson to her new office and wish her an open, discursive and productive collaboration with the representatives of art and culture in Berlin.
